Clanfingon Belted Galloway Stud originally
purchased stud cows and a bull from Sulby Park
in 1991 when that stud was dispersed. All cattle
are open paddock reared with an aim for even
temperament, hardiness, and purity of breed
characteristics. Only the show team are fed
grain and then only sparingly. All other animals
are fed grass or hay only. We vary our gene pool
and to this end we started with a bull with
bloodlines from New Zealand, then to a locally
bred bull (South Australian) and Bam Bam
(Victorian). Our current sires are Clanfingon
Limelight, Clanfingon Nixen and du Rapide
Legacy. There is generally a selection of both
males and females for sale.
We chose Belted Galloways because of their
distinctive marking, the fact that they were not
too big for me (Judy) to handle and when both
Donald and I were at work in town we did not
have to worry that a cow might be calving as it
would all just happen and we would come home to
a healthy active calf and cow. When we first
chose them we had no way of knowing that for us
they were the ideal breed. They are not only
beautiful but also easy to handle, economical
and tasty. When our friends visit we always try
to give them a meal of beltie beef. They have
traditionally been a very under-rated beef beast
and I believe still are. Unfortunately stock
agents have trouble believing something that
looks as if they belong in a park can be a
productive animal. When we first bought our herd
the locals constantly told us “You breed cattle
for dough not for show”. Once the locals saw
them they called our girls “Balloons on Wheels”.
